Washington Closure Hanford - Projects
Field Remediation Project
The Field Remediation Project is responsible for safely cleaning up 370 waste sites and burial grounds located at the Hanford Site. This includes liquid waste disposal cribs and trenches, buried pipelines and areas contaminated by operational leaks and accidental spills. Buried materials include chemically and radioactively contaminated materials, such as asbestos, lead, chromium, carbon tetrachloride, strontium, uranium, cesium and tritium.
The cleanup process involves:
- sampling and analyzing the site to determine the extent and type of radioactive and chemically contaminated waste materials,
- excavating radioactive and chemically contaminated waste materials,
- restoring the landscape through site backfill, grading and revegetation.
